John H. Macarthur

MacArthur Studio
Rockville, MD

A child prodigy in the world of art, John MacArthur first picked up a brush at the tender age of four. By the time he was six, he was already experimenting with natural objects to create his own pigments. His talent was undeniable, and as a young teen, he caught the eye of none other than President Kennedy with one of his portraits. Before he even turned twenty, he had established himself as one of the renowned "Artists of Jackson Square" in New Orleans. However, like many prodigies, he disappeared from the art scene for nearly 25 years.

In the early 90's, John MacArthur made a triumphant return to the world of art, painting and selling his work once again. His pieces were highly sought after, with the Governor of Maryland's wife even adding one of his paintings to her collection. Not long after, the Maryland Jockey Club commissioned him to create promotional artwork for the prestigious Preakness Stakes in 2002 and 2003. His talent did not go unnoticed, as he went on to create pieces for various businesses, from the Marriot Corporation to America On Line (AOL).

Amidst his commercial success, John MacArthur established MacArthur Studio, first in Laurel, Md, then in Aspen Hill, Md, before settling in his current location in Rockville, Maryland. His focus shifted from commercial work to creating pieces that captured the attention of art enthusiasts far and wide. In the past decade, he has garnered over 20 first place ribbons from various art shows across the state, solidifying his reputation as a masterful artist.

After a rejuvenating trip to Europe in 2016, John MacArthur's passion for art was reignited. His travels through iconic cities and landscapes inspired a new chapter in his artistic journey. Today, his work continues to captivate audiences, with an impressive nine first place ribbons earned in 2022 alone. For those looking to add a touch of creativity to their homes or offices, John MacArthur's prints are sure to make a statement in any space.
