Heather Duris, an artist who has made Lawrence, KS her home for nearly two decades, originally hails from Independence, MO. Her artistic journey began as a Multimedia Illustrator in the Army Reserves from 1996-1999, followed by earning a BA in Administration of Justice from UMKC in 1999. After serving four years on active duty as a Chemical Officer in the US Army, Heather settled in Lawrence in 2003. She pursued her passion for art at KU, graduating in 2007 with a BFA in Painting and a Minor in Art History. Heather, along with her husband Zdenko, is a proud parent of two daughters and operates a home studio where she creates jewelry, paintings, and prints.
Since 2014, Heather has been crafting personalized jewelry, which she sells through various outlets including Etsy, the Phoenix Gallery in downtown Lawrence, and Cat and Nine Bells in Beloit, Wisconsin. Specializing in sterling silver, Heather creates rings, pendants, and hand-stamped charms, showcasing her unique style under the brands Hip Mom Jewelry and Sporty Girl Jewelry. While jewelry-making fulfills her desire to work with her hands, painting remains her true passion. Heather's paintings often feature abstract Kansas landscapes that evoke a sense of nostalgia for the serene beauty of the prairie. Drawing inspiration from the colors of the landscape, she carefully crafts each composition to reflect the geometric lines of farmlands and the meandering patterns of ancient creek beds.
Heather's work aims to evoke memories of the ancient prairie, fostering a connection to the land that encourages stewardship and respect. Her art is a tribute to the natural beauty of Kansas, capturing the essence of the land through vibrant colors and intricate compositions. Each piece reflects her deep appreciation for the environment and a desire to inspire others to cherish and protect it.
