Ian's passion for drawing began in his childhood, but it wasn't until the late 1980s that he delved into the world of watercolor. Inspired by the glimpses of Europe he saw from fast-moving trains, he decided to try his hand at this new medium. During a stop in Florence, Italy, he ventured into a supply store and purchased basic materials within his budget of $30 per day. This simple act of picking up a brush and paint had a profound impact on his creative process, allowing him to slow down and truly absorb his surroundings.
After his initial foray into watercolor, Ian held his first exhibition at a gallery in Stonington, CT, just a couple of years later. Since then, his style has evolved through trial and error, as he continuously learns from observing other artists he admires. Over the past 25 years, Ian has showcased his work in various local and regional galleries, outdoor art shows, and solo exhibitions. While he used to have a studio in downtown Westerly, RI, he now creates from the comfort of his home.
Ian's artwork has garnered a loyal local following, but it has also made its way into international collections, a dream he never thought possible when he first started sketching in the hills of Florence. His paintings capture the beauty and essence of the places he has visited, evoking a sense of nostalgia and wanderlust in viewers. For those looking to add a touch of artistic flair to their home or office decor, Ian's prints are a perfect choice. Each piece tells a story and brings a piece of his travels into your space.
