Mark Goodhew, a native of South Bend, Indiana, currently calls LaGrange, Indiana home. His journey into photography began during his studies in graphic design and art at Ball State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Graphic Design with a minor in marketing. After graduation, he delved into the marketing and advertising field at his family's NAPA Auto Parts business, eventually transitioning into his current role as the VP of warehouse operations and purchasing. It wasn't until 2007 when Mark purchased his first digital camera that he reignited his passion for photography, leading him to explore and refine his digital imagery skills.
In his artist statement, Mark reflects on his evolution from traditional film photography to the digital realm, where he enjoys the freedom to manipulate and enhance his photos in new and creative ways. He describes his photos as "Photo Paintings," drawing inspiration from the natural beauty of the outdoors. Mark's photography often leans towards "Abstract Impressionism," capturing moments that evoke a sense of nature's presence in a unique and artistic manner. Viewing his work from a distance reveals the intricate details and colors that transform his photos into captivating visual experiences.
Mark's creative process involves capturing intriguing photos in the field and then utilizing computer software to enhance and bring out the hidden colors and textures within the images. Through techniques like layering and manipulation, he transforms his photos into abstract designs that blur the lines between photography and painting. Embracing a new direction in abstract photography, Mark explores the art of cropping and combining smaller areas of his photographs to create visually striking compositions.
