Justin W. John

In his artist's statement, Justin W John delves into the inspirations behind his work, explaining how his naturally inquisitive and introspective mind processes the transitions and connections in the world around him. He finds inspiration in interpersonal relationships, textual translations, and the pixelated information that make up our evolving social norms. Through periods of reflection and random synaptic firings, he connects the dots within the kaleidoscope of his creative process.

Born in 1981 on the U.S. Naval Base Subic Bay in the Philippines, Justin W John grew up on the East Coast in Virginia and Maryland. His artistic talents led him to study graphic design at the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore, where he received his BFA in 2003. Afterward, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he began his career as a freelance graphic and web designer, working with clients like B.E.T., The Peace Corps, and McGraw-Hill Publishing.

Justin's creative journey also led him to become involved in D.C.'s music scene and take on roles in the retail industry with companies like Urban Outfitters and Pottery Barn. In 2014, he made the cross-country move to Boise, Idaho, to be closer to his family, and he now resides and creates in his studio at the historic Idanha Hotel. Splitting his time between Idaho and Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where his father resides, Justin continues to draw inspiration from his surroundings and experiences.
