The artwork of Donald Hazen Brown, spanning from 1934 to 2013, is preserved in this archive. Despite a lifelong passion for art, Brown initially prioritized his career as a United Methodist minister, serving for 42 years until his retirement in 1998. Following retirement, he dedicated himself fully to his artistic pursuits. Brown obtained his bachelor's degree from Emory & Henry College and pursued further education at Drew University Theological School, earning two master's degrees. Throughout his career, Brown exhibited his artwork at various locations, with his first public showing at the New City, NY Library in 1983.
Brown's journey to find the perfect space to create his art is detailed in a heartfelt letter dated June 10, 2006. From his childhood home in Allendale, NJ, to various parsonages throughout his ministry, Brown sought out dedicated spaces to paint amidst the demands of his profession. With the help of his son, Paul, a local contractor and cabinet maker, Brown was able to transform his basement into a beautiful art studio and gallery. This space, meticulously designed and crafted by Paul, finally provided Brown with the ideal "Place to Paint".
