Brian Wilkes is an acclaimed Southern Illinois artist known for his vivid colors and powerful portrayals. He seeks to raise his audience's awareness of the natural world, rural life, indigenous cultures, and the deeper aspects of family. His artwork has been compared to the likes of Van Gogh, Duchamp, Picasso, Max, and Warhol.
Wilkes was born in Appalachia with strong Southern roots and has been creating art for over half a century. After receiving a degree in art education in 1974, he decided at age 68 that it was time to make art his primary focus once more.
His photography skills were put to use in journalism as he traveled the world and captured images of world leaders, celebrities, and the space program. By his mid-sixties, he had decided to create the art that had been lingering in his mind for decades. He once joked, “At least my mid-life identity crisis doesn’t involve a motorcycle or a sports car!”
Wilkes now encourages art enthusiasts to consider purchasing his prints for their home or office. His work is a stunning addition to any space, and allows for viewers to experience his unique perspective and captivating artistry.
