Two soft drink bottles are prominently featured in the foreground in this artwork. On the left side is Leninade, Get Hammered and Sickled; a spoof on the Soviet Union. On the right side a Diet Frostie Root Beer, featuring a Santa Claus-like icon. This work’s color scheme inverts the real world version of these drinks to represent the symbolic “inside-out” feeling of American politics since the 2016 election. The idea that “pop” found at a local mid-western grocery store was so mundane as to be almost overlooked, made the image more compelling to create. Much like people deny or laugh off really serious issues about election interference if they perceive that it benefits them, Diet Frosty Santa laughs while chilling next to the Leninade. “It’s worth waiting in line for!” I think humor can get people to think about their environment and how they process information in a new way. That, in part, motivated me to create this piece.
