All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go on Planet A

All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go on Planet A layers a Harper’s Bazaar magazine cover with a coral reef ecosystem. The purpose of this piece is to show the linkage between the fashion industry and environmental issues, particularly marine biology. It depicts striped fish searching for food on a bleaching coral reef juxtaposed with a fashion model who is very thin wearing a large, striped hat. Our oceans contain vast resources and biodiversity that are threatened by climate change. Fast fashion is known to use resources that increase carbon emissions and add micro plastics to rivers, lakes, and oceans. Coral reefs are vulnerable to both. In recent years, coral reefs around the world have died off after going through a process called bleaching. It is not common to hear about coral reef issues in the mainstream media, on social media, or even in school curricula. Yet, the outsize importance the reefs play for the global environment cannot be stated enough. Some scientists warn that a collapse of the ocean reef system could set into motion a global crisis that impacts every ecosystem causing massive extinction. Because the coral reefs mean so much to our global environment, I want to highlight them in my artwork.
