I See You and It Still Matters

A male figure stands with his back to the viewer, filling up nearly the entire left half of the composition. A red handprint is smeared across the back of his white t-shirt and it is enclosed with a heart and the words, “Black Lives Matter.” A semi-transparent reflection of his figure fills the right side of the composition. Both figures look into a dark void. This work was inspired by people close to me who lost their fathers. In particular, young men who are or did grow up without a father because they died an untimely death. I see you and it still matters refers to their experience of remembering their fathers, but also my acknowledgment of the struggle they go through in life because that person isn’t there to guide them. This is particularly true for men and boys in the black community.
