This work represents the ongoing struggle of living in Missouri as a woman. Presently, this state is at the forefront of legal challenges to women’s reproductive rights. Who gets to say how we govern our bodies: the government? God? Men? GOD HELP US symbolizes that women continue to struggle for autonomy over our bodies due to outside political, religious, and cultural forces. Two women in green dresses wearing high heels have their hands on their hips and look down their noses at the viewer. Diamond rings can be seen under their skirts. They appear to be tapping their toes. The words, “GOD HELP US” run vertically up and down the left and right sides of the composition. I chose the subject matter because the women appear boxed in by different elements. Green is for the green dresses the sellout women politicians wear when they serve the patriarchy against us and themselves. I wanted them to look bored and impatient because we know best what we need and we are tired of being a pawn in everybody’s else’s battle.
