Atlas of Agendas

This digital artwork was inspired by several real world problems we face today. Climate change threatens all of us and we tend to think about it in terms of recycling our trash or using less gasoline. I was surprised to discover that one of the biggest challenges to solving the climate crisis is the fashion industry. Because of the way clothes are manufactured and distributed, the fashion industry has one of the largest carbon footprints of any industry in the world. The second problem I researched was the modern human slave industry. While sex trafficking is widely discussed, other forms of slavery are not as well known. Workers in the manufacturing, fishing, and domestic industries continue to suffer, while the rest of the world benefits from their work. To that end, I chose the fashionable women looking up in an oblivious manner, as the Atlas of Agendas laid deep lines and tracks across their skin. I chose an artificial, but soft color scheme to suggest the way we all play down hard facts. Ultimately, I use my digital drawings as a medium to reduce my carbon footprint, and only print works of art when buyers want them. Hopefully, by showing my work and talking about these issues, viewers will consider some of these problems from a different perspective. Ultimately, if a viewer walks away with a little bit more empathy towards others, I think that is success.
