The Firehole River Near the Upper Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.⁠ ⁠ The Firehole flows from Madison Lake through a number of major geothermal areas, including the Upper Geyser Basin, part of which can be seen in the background. ⁠ ⁠ Hot water runoff into the river heats it in places to as high as 30 °C (86 °F) before it is re-chilled by various tributaries, eventually becoming cool enough to support trout. ⁠ ⁠ Trout were introduced to the river in the late 1880's, and a program to release various species of hatchery-raised fish continued until 1955. The population of wild fish is now maintained through sustainable fly fishing practices, and the river has become a destination for serious anglers from around the world.⁠ ⁠ This image was taken along the Upper Geyser Loop Trail that follows the river and that provides access to boardwalks that allow you to safely view the many geysers and springs in the area.⁠
