The Narrows and Signal Hill

Seaside By Eric Winkler

A sunny day brings out the colors at The Narrows and Signal Hill. St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. Only 61 m wide at one point, it takes a steady hand at the wheel to bring a large ship in from the raging Atlantic to the sanctuary of the harbor. The strategic harbor is protected by Fort Amherst and other defenses, including a chain that could be raised across the harbor mouth. Signal Hill, in the background, is where the first transatlantic wireless transmission was received by Guglielmo Marconi in 1901.
