Fontana del Pantheon

Cities and Towns By Eric Winkler

Detail from the Fontana del Pantheon at night. Rome, Italy. The fountain sits in the Piazza della Rotonda in front of the Pantheon, and was commissioned in 1575 by Pope Gregory XIII (who is known for his calendar). An Egyptian obelisk dating to the time of the pharaoh Ramses II was added to the top of the fountain during the 18th century. The original marble elements of the fountain were removed to the Museum of Rome in 1886, and replaced by the replicas seen here. I really liked how the underwater lights illuminated the water and cast shadows on the sculptures.
