Statues and Dome, Saint Peter's

Cities and Towns By Eric Winkler

Statues on the facade of Saint Peter's Basilica (Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano) at dusk. Vatican City. Thirteen large (~6m tall) statues crown the facade of the Basilica, and were created by different sculptors between 1612-14. While the Basilica is dedicated to Saint Peter, he is not represented among the figures of Christ and the Apostles on the facade. The 13th figure is that of Saint John the Baptist. One can take an interesting climb to the flat roof of the Basilica, where you can get a close look at these statues and have beautiful view over the Piazza San Pietro to the Tiber and the city beyond.
