Pantheon at Night

Cities and Towns By Eric Winkler

Late night diners scurry by the illuminated facade and portico of the Pantheon, Rome, Italy. The Pantheon was build on the site of earlier temples that were destroyed by fires that ravaged Rome over the centuries, with only the facade and portico surviving the blazes. The present cylindrical structure is topped by what remains the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome was completed by the Emperor Hadrian around 126 AD. It was consecrated as a Christian church by Pope Boniface II in 609.
