I started working on this piece around 5 p.m.EST of January 26th, 2020. I felt such a tremendous lost for a man that died, and I’ve never met him. However I felt as though I’ve walked the same path as he did. I’ve experience the height of career success the same time a he did. I’ve experienced life’s setbacks the same time as he has. Kobe Bryant had a way of connecting a generation of basketball fans, pop culture followers, and those that aren’t into sports. We all grew up and was told that the keys to success in life lies in the the amount of hard work you put into your craft. Tireless energy and the strongest of wills got all of us to the top. Kobe Bryant was the embodiment of my generation. Not quite the greatest like Michael (Jordan or Jackson) nor Muhammad Ali, but he was my generations greatest champion. What resonated from me watching the sad coverage of his death, was that Kobe Bryant literally taught a generation how to live and achieve your goals in life by playing a game of basketball. I can’t say that about Michael Jordan, LeBron James , or any recent or back-in-the-day player. As I was working on this I was fearful of if I can muster up my own “Mamba Mentality” to do this man justice on the canvas. I stopped and started several times through 2020 and pushed myself to artistic lengths to capture the essence of Kobe Bryant. If he worked as hard as he could to be the very best in his craft, I have to do the same for this piece. That’s’s why I call it “Mamba Mentality”. I take this approach to all my projects, all my work as an artist, all my work when I was technician, all my efforts serving this nation as soldier in the Army, all my efforts as a student, a friend , a brother, a son, and a Man. “Mamba Out!” -Kobe-
