Miles Davis in Heaven

Portraits By Carlos H. Burgess

This is a digital painting in photoshop. I worked on this during my dialysis treatments back in October of 2015. The treatments lasted about 4.5 hours so I needed to do something to pass the time. So had my laptop and my Wacom tablet and went to work on my first digital portrait drawing. I used the cover of his famed album Some Kind of Blue as a reference image. I felt that that image represented the intensity and concentration Miles put into capturing the right note during one of his performance. I wanted to take that same approach in doing this portrait. I wanted to push my skills as a portrait artist at the same time as trying to learn a new medium. Furthermore, I wanted to really escape from the fact that I'm starting hemodialysis treatments for the first time and how scared, weak and less confident it made me feel. I fall heavily into my art whenever life throws me a curveball because I needed to feel good about myself.
