I created this drawing back in January 2018. I wanted to do a drawing for Black History month in February spotlighting African American woman. I decided to a stylized illustration because I have such a passion for cartoon illustration. So that brought me to the story of Betty Boop-or Esther Jones. The legendary cartoon character created by Max Fleisher in the 1920's and 30's was based off of the inspiration of a Harlem Cotton Club singer Esther "Baby Esther" Jones. Fleischer visited the Cotton Club one night while Baby Esther was performing. Her "boop-boop-de-boop" catch phrase was the inspiration behind the creation of the Betty Boop character. So what I did was I found some images of Baby Esther and recreated the character in my own art style. It was hand-drawn then scanned and uploaded in my Infinite Painter Pro Software where I created a watercolour painting from the drawing. I added some lines and sparkling effects to emphasize lights and action of the Harlem Renaissance from back in the late 1920's-1930s.
