Bird Effigy at Poverty Point

The Land By J. L. Thomason

Photography. Beneath the strata of modern America aside its natural riparian networks a layer of other cultures emerge. In Eastern Louisiana Poverty Point is evidence of such ancient people. Aside enormous semi-circular mounds is the formation thought to be a bird effigy consisting of approximately 17 million bushels of earth. Poverty Point was thought to be a thriving center of human activity some 3,500 years ago. The scale of the effigy teases the imagination.
