Milkweed seedpod, 2019

Fall and Winter By Alessandra Chaves

The milkweed (genus Asclepias), are herbaceous, perennial, flowering plants that owe their common name to their latex. The young shoots are edible if harvested in early spring and boiled several times to get rid of the toxic latex. The seedpods explode in late summer, spreading their seeds to found the next generation of plants. I took this photo at the UC Davis arboretum on a warm afternoon. Most pods had already opened, and all the plants were getting ready for their Autumn retreat.
