Lily seedpod, 2021

Fall and Winter By Alessandra Chaves

When it is seedpod time, I am often reminded that something has to die for something else to emerge and give continuity. Nature has found not only immortality, but immortality with renovation, in reproduction. Everything passes, everything is ephemeral, but the core of everything remains unchanged: that life energy that is present within each living thing. Lily seedpod, 2021, portrays seed pod of the Common Yellow Day Lily, Hemerocallis lilioasphodelus. This plant is very common in the UC Davis Arboretum, where it flowers in the spring and summerr. In the winter, however, the flowers are replaced by the seedpods, carrying the bright red seeds that will give rise to the next generation.
