Araucaria tree, 2021

1. Summer By Alessandra Chaves

Araucarias once covered most of the earth, and are not reduced to patches in the Southern Hemisphere. These conifers are long-lived and an important component of the ecosystem in temperate Southern hemisphere forests. I took this photograph in the Brazilian Southeast, a few months before this beautiful tree was cut down due to erosion underneath of it and danger it posed to the houses around.
