Succulent pattern, 2020

3. Succulent leaf By Alessandra Chaves

Succulents have engorged, thick leaves that store water, a adaptation to dry environments. It is no surprise that these plants are very common in California's Central Valley. Succulent pattern, 2020, was featured in my self-published book “Chloroplast” (blurb.com), a photographic exploration of the world of organisms that derive energy from the sun. I came to the UC Davis Arboretum early in the morning for this photo, before the sunrise, to catch the soft light on this leaf pattern, and was rewarded with these soft shades.
