Rainbow Over Limetree Oil Refinery, St. Croix,USVI

Caribbean By Emily St. Amant

This painting is of the Limetree Oil Refinery on the south shore of St. Croix, with a rainbow over it. I saw this rainbow and I made my husband pull over so I could take the photo that would be the reference picture. To construct this monstrosity of “development,” the surrounding waters were dredged, destroying coral reefs that many fish and marine animals call home. Its opening brought an economic boom to the island, led to an influx of people from the states, and changed the culture of the island. However, once it shut down, times were tough. It has been a source of pollution, at one point spewing toxic chemicals over a neighborhood. Driving past it always provoked feelings of disgust and anger at the open wound this plant created on such a beautiful island and the harm it has caused the community. The rainbow appears in stark opposition as a symbol of hope for change. The original watercolor painting is by Emily St. Amant, completed in 2024. ~~~ Products in additional sizes, materials, and item types are available.
