2. HOUSE AT THE TOP OF THE HILL

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

1995 ROCKLAND LAKE, NY I had come up this hill many times during my exercise workouts at Rockland Lake State Park. Although not a long hill, it is a very steep hill. So it was always a great relief to reach the top of the hill where the road levels out. Getting to the top became a goal, an achievement of sorts-a victory. The strong, pure, brilliant light on the side of the house was my primary interest in this painting. I used the strong shadows in the foreground and the darker side of the house as contrast. Light is often symbolic of truth. It dispels the darkness and shows us the way. The light flooding this house on the top of the hill was for me emblematic of the pure light of truth we may ultimately know at the top of life's hill.
