99. The Red Birdhouse

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

2003 MENDHAM, NJ. Seated in the chapel at Morning Prayer, this tree was visible through the window. Impressed by the character of the tree, I later in the day made a sketch of it. As I drew and painted, I noticed the red birdhouse suspended among the branches. The little red roof stood in stark colorful contrast to the rest of the rather drab early spring scene. The gnarled and twisted branches of this tree outside the chapel seemed to call for heavily drawn lines to emphasize its twisted nature. To make the painting consistent, I included similar markings throughout the picture creating a feeling of motion and activity. The red birdhouse, however, tiny as it is, remains the focal point of the painting. Keeping one's focus on the primary and significant things of life is sometimes no easy task. Like the twisted and swirling lines in the painting, there is often much to distract.
