93. Arbor Friendship

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

1995 NYACK STATE BEACH PARK, NYACK, NY. I was returning from sketching the cliffs of the Palisades at Hook Mountain further north on the Hudson River when I came upon the two men fishing beneath this rather unusual tree. Time was now short, so I photographed the scene and painted the picture a few days later. The arched curve of the tree is not exaggerated or distorted. It is as nature has formed it. The two men fishing benefit from the cool shade it provides on a hot August day. I wanted the painting to convey how the tree seems to reach out to lovingly provide shelter and protection for the men who are fishing. Symbolically, this can be an image of how mother Creation benevolently embraces us and in turn asks for our love, our friendship, and our care of Creation herself. The time has come for us to care for the Creation as nature so marvelously cares for us.
