61. 23rd Street Beach

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

2006 OCEAN CITY, NJ The southern most part of the boardwalk in Ocean City ends at 23rd street. It was from there that I made a preliminary sketch for this painting. It was a very warm day in July. The sun was hot, there was no shade and no place to sit. I worked for more than an hour and then retreated to a cooler location to finish the painting. The dunes are a bit higher here at 23rd street, the beaches less crowded with swimmers, and catamarans are given permission to come ashore. All this makes for a more natural unrestricted setting. It was a sense of freedom and fun at the shore on a beautiful July day that I felt as I did this painting. We can only imagine the summer frolic beyond our view on the other side of the dunes. Perhaps we need to imagine more of that for ourselves.
