73 A. Columns of Stone

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

This was the second painting I did of these two stone columns. The first I painted from the other side. These stone pillars form a gateway for a service road at Ringwood Manner State Park in New Jersey. I spent one day sketching them and then returning on another day to paint them. The purple pudding stone from which the columns are crafted, are regal in appearance. They glisten when the rays of the sun strike them at certain angles. As I drew them, I admired the skill of some stone cutter who years ago shaped them into perfect blocks for building. Placed one on top of the other and cemented together, they form two elegant columns to mark a passage through the stone wall. It is so easy to forget and overlook the craftsmanship and skills of those who preceded us. The beauty of their work surrounds us. We give homage to our humanity when we acknowledge their talent.
