67. Suburban Woods

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

8/1/1996 KNOLL ST., PENNINGTON, NJ - Another development, more townhouses, and another stretch of woods are now consumed by the bulldozer. A thin line of trees is now all that remains from a hillside once graced by fields and woods. As I sat in my car early one February morning, the rain falling on my wind-shield and the foreboding sky heavy with more rain and wind to come, I sketched the scene before me---a new housing development in Pennington, New Jersey. As I sketched, I felt both sadness and anger. Must every field be raped of woods and streams? Must the landscape be decimated every time a new building is erected? Are all our forest and woods destined to be reduced to a token few trees left standing after construction has ended? Can't we take a little more time, plan a little bit more thoughtfully, and spend a little bit more money to preserve the beauty of God's creation as we satisfy our human need for shelter?
