54. Longport Bridge

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

2007 OCEAN CITY, NJ. Searching for an ocean landscape one June morning, I drove out to the north end of Ocean City, New Jersey. As I approached the end of the island, I became interested in the recently completed new bridge that spanned Egg Harbor, connecting Ocean City to Longport. Finding a place to park my car, I walked in among the sand dunes to obtain a pleasing view of the bridge. Unfolding my chair, I sat down and began a sketch in my portable watercolor sketchbook. By the time I had completed the drawing, however, the light from the summer sun was now shinning directly on my white paper, causing a blinding glare. Unable to continue, I left and returned early the next morning while the sun was still low on the horizon. Quickly I set up my paints and completed the sketch and later, from the sketch, did a full size painting. Bridges intrigue me. They are connecting structures. They are symbols of our need as a human species to be more connected to each other---to extend ways of crossing over the barriers of race, gender, nationality and language that so often unnecessarily divide us. The gracefulness of this bridge from Ocean City to Longport reminds us that such connecting can be beautiful.
