50. Currituck Lighthouse

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

5/2/2005 OUTERBANKS, NC. On the northernmost banks of the Outer Banks in Corolla, North Carolina is this stately lighthouse. In continuous service since 1875, the natural red brick makes it unique among the other lighthouses up and down the Carolina coast. On a November afternoon I make a preliminary sketch as tourist went in and out of the lighthouse, many climbing to the observation platform at the very top. I too was a tourist, but I went home with my own impression of the lighthouse captured in line and color. It is good to find ways to hold on to impressions---they are the stuff of which memories are made.
