40. Old Red Truck

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

9/22/2005 WARWICK, NY. On a beautify autumn morning I had set myself up to do a painting of this weathered barn on Route 94 in Warwick, N.Y. Two other barns stood nearby, but to simplify the painting, I focused just on the nearest one. It was only after I had nearly completed the sketch, that I noticed an old red truck parked among the bushes. I was so centered on drawing the barn, that I almost overlooked the red truck half hidden in the shrubbery. In Winslow Homer fashion, I used this red object to add an interesting highlight to the painting. It is good to stay focused. It gives us a direction in life. But sometimes our concentration is so narrow that we overlook and neglect other possibilities all around us. Often we settle for what is the immediate, without a serious look at what else life offers.
