2003 - To draw this painting, I used a stick twig, dipped it in waterproof India Ink, and roughly drew the outlines of the trees. I intentionally wanted the trunks to look rough and sturdy, prepared to weather the onset of winter. Lines, drawn and painted, in a sort of VanGogh manner, are evident throughout the picture. I like the way these trees on the edge of what might have been a corn field, stand in a row, remnants of what was probably woodlands before the fields were cleared for farming. Beaten and weathered, prepared for another season of snow and ice, they nevertheless seem to have a determination about them. They are there to stay. In their own way, they are an inspiration to us as we weather season after season in our own lives.
