30. A Church That Was

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

2000 ALLENDALE, NJ AFTER ABBE ROSE COX. This church building no longer exists. The congregation torn it down in 1963 and replaced with a new a contemporary church structure. It is the Archer United Methodist Church in Allendale, N.J., the church in which I was baptized and confirmed as a young boy. One of the members was a talented artist, Abbe Rose Cox. It was she who painted the original watercolor painting of the church. In my early college years, Abbe Rose introduced me to the art of watercolor. Thus when recently I wanted to do a painting of my boyhood church, I borrowed the original painting by Abbe Rose and made my copy of her painting. It was not only a way of recreating an icon of my boyhood, but also a way to pay homage to one who very early on tutored me and inspired me to pursue my interest in painting. Acknowledging those who have been inspirations to us is a way of expressing our gratitude. It also acknowledges that we all, in some way or another, stand in debt to others.
