2008 OCEAN CITY, NJ. Kites have always fascinated me. So when walking along the boardwalk one summer afternoon I spotted kites flying over the beach, it immediately captivated my attention. One of the kites flying in the strong ocean breeze of the day was a kite designed in the shape of a bird. It fact, it was so life-like, that I had to look twice to be sure it wasn't in fact an actual bird. With camera in hand, I quickly took a photo with the intent of using the kite bird for a painting. Some months latter, I embarked upon the painting. I sensed from the outset that the large expanse of blue sky was going to present a problem. After two failures, I finally succeeded, laying in the sky with a wet in wet fashion. The elegant bird was fun to paint. The kite bird, stretched out in perfect form by the wind blowing in off the ocean reminds us that to "stay aloft" we need a passion, a goal, a purpose to "lift us", and give form and direction to our lives. Then, like the kite bird, our lives take on beauty and elegance. And we ride with the wind.
