16. Abandoned House

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

1996 ROCKLAND LAKE, NY. For years a small, fragile, elderly woman could be seen tending the grounds and gardens of this house overlooking Rockland Lake, in Congers, N.Y. The house was attractive and welcoming. Then, as time passed, she was no longer seen. She seemed to vanish. The lawns and grounds became overgrown. The windows were boarded up. One can only assume that she died or moved away. Perhaps she could no longer care herself. In any event, the house was deserted and abandoned. In the painting I wanted to create a sense of abandonment---of being alone and left alone to gradually disintegrate. There is sadness to this scene. The winter snows are appropriate to the feeling of coldness, loneliness, desertion and abandonment. One almost longs for some sign of life--but there .are none. Where did she go? What happened to her? Where will􀀟 ultimately go and what will happen to us? The last rays of the winter afternoon sun seen in the glow of the sky and the shadows of the house, give us a sign of hope.
