14. House Behind the Wall

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

2001 RINGWOOD MANOR, NJ. This lovely old house is situated within Ringwood Manner State Park in New Jersey. It is not open to the public. Set behind the stonewall and being closed to others, it feels secluded. The huge trees on either side seem to stand guard, acting as two sentinels to keep everyone away. Since there was no way to get beyond the wall and enter the house, the next best thing for me to do was to sketch and paint it. Somehow, by painting the house I felt a more intimate relationship with it---that it was no longer forbidden and hidden on the other side of the wall. There are many ways to overcome the barriers of those who are strangers to us. No wall need ever be a permanent obstruction.
