2003 - MENDHAM, NJ. In a very loose and impressionalistic style, I contrasted the swirling lines of he foliage and trees with the straight and linear lines of the wall and the gatehouse. I allowed my pallet to determine the colors. This gateway to the cemetery is part of the Convent of St. John Baptist in Mendham, N. J. The tombstones mark the burial of Episcopal nuns and clergy. Cemeteries mark not only the end of life but also, when respectfully maintained, mark the transition to another dimension of life. Thus I felt no restraint nor disrespect in rendering this painting with in a lively and colorful manner.
