3. The Hudson in November

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

2007 - STONY POINT, NY A warm, late November day provided me with an opportunity to sketch and paint this picture. To access this view of the Hudson River I climbed up to the top of a rocky bluff in Little Stony Point Park in Cold Spring, New York . From there the view looking northward up the river put the Storm King Mountain on my left and the hills of Beacon on my right. Though "mild" for November, it was still a very chilly day. I felt the cold as I sketched, and wanted to capture that same feeling in the painting. Hence the colors are cool and muted and the bar􀀥tree given a prominence in the composition. Sometimes we have no alternative but to bear the "cold" days in our lives when things are gray and barren. Such occasions have their own message. Can we learn from them?
