63. BOARDWALK IN SUMMER

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

2005 OCEAN CITY, NJ This playful little sketch, in the manner of the French Impressionist, Paul Signac, attempts to capture the color, action, and gaiety of an ocean front boardwalk in the summer. I made the drawing from a vantage point on the beach in Ocean City. The Ferris wheel in the background, towering over the cornucopia of stores, the boardwalk itself, and the beach below, is a colorful symbol of the festivity that marks a summer day at the Jersey Shore. Summer, in our culture, is vacation time. It offers an opportunity to be more carefree. It's a chance to relax and "let go' of the cares that from time to time overwhelm us. Often the summer is a time to find a "new lease on life." For many, the boardwalk in July and August provides that opportunity.
