ROCKLAND LAKE, NY What drew me into this painting was the manner in which these young saplings queue up along the shoreline of Rockland Lake, forming a curtain-like reredos between the shore of the lake and the water of the lake. The trees seemed to literally dance on the water's edge, at once inviting the viewer to peer beyond to the peaceful waters of the lake and at the same time requesting that one remain in place, keeping a distance from the shore and contemplate the beauty of the trees themselves. The trees seem playful---enjoying their dual role and somewhat mixed message. Ambiguity is like that. It leaves us wondering. We can rebel at such uncertainty or join in its playfulness. The trees, it seems, are telling us to dance with ambiguity and play at life. The patches of sunlight in the foreground that break through the leafy shade seem to affirm this!
