80. AUTUMN FAIRYLAND AT RAMAPO

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

RAMAPO RESERVATION, NJ It was a late autumn day when I first made a realistic sketch of this bridge over which the orange trail passes at Ramapo Reservation in Mahwah, N. J. Back home in my studio, I abandoned my first sketch. To lessen the intensity of the painting, I subdued and soften the edges of the trees, the rocks, the water, and the autumn leaves that covered the ground. I wanted to create an imaginary, fairyland-like forest that had an air of mystery about it. A land of make-believe has an appeal to everyone. It provides a moment in which we can suspend disbelief and pretend. Such experiences provide a welcomed respite from the pressures of everyday living. Let your imagination climb over the soft rocks, wade in the quietly moving stream and walk into the mist of the forest.
