79. WARRENSBURG ROOFS

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

1983 WARRENSBURG, NY I was on my way into the grocery store in Warrensburg, New York when I glanced across the parking lot and saw this arrangement of roof lines. There were telephone poles, light poles, wires and trees that obscured part of my view. I took a quick snap shot for further reference. When I painted this picture, I eliminated everything but the buildings and the roofs. I wanted an unobstructed view so that I could emphasize the relationship of one roof to another. One roof in and of itself would not have made a very interesting composition. But a combination of roofs together has the potential for an appealing arrangement. This is what can make life so engaging: the bringing together of several points of view into some composite whole. The result is often much fuller and richer than the one alone.
