57. AFTER THE STORM

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

2005 OCEAN CITY, NJ This fishing pier at 59th Street in Ocean City, New Jersey has obviously been badly battered by high winds and waves of a bygone storm. Aside from painting the remaining piers and cross beams, I suggested the remnants of a storm itself in the dark, gray clouds hanging above a clearing sky. I remembered a time when the fishing pier, intact, stretched a good ways out into the ocean. It provided enthusiastic fishermen an opportunity to cast their lines far out into the surf. It is rather sad to see this once majestic pier reduced to such shambles. There is always a sense of melancholy when that which we have admired is diminished and lost. It is only memory that keeps them alive for us.
