97. ALL IN A LINE

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

I found these trees fascinating. All in a line, obviously intentionally planted so by the owners of the long gone estate at Skylands Gardens in Ringwood, N.J. On a cool August morning, as I set out to paint them, I placed myself in the middle of the roadway and marveled at the beauty of the orderliness and symmetry of the trees. Although life at times seems chaotic and without purpose, these trees reminded me that there is, finally, an orderliness and meaning to life. Like the roadway that runs between the lines of trees, the road goes somewhere; there is a horizon; there is an ending. And the journey down that road is walled with beauty, much as these lovely, stately trees escort any traveler as he journeys toward his destination.
