94.C. TREE ON ROANOKE ISLAND AT SUNSET

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

It was late in the day when our visit to historic Roanoke Island was ending. Dusk was heavily upon us. It was then I saw this tree outlined against the waters of the bay and the sky of a pale sunset. Quickly I photographed the silhouette of the tree and later used the photo as a reference for this painting. It was the character of the tree that I wanted to capture in the painting. Set against a twilight sky, it seems to say, "though I appear worn and old, I belong here---this is my home, this is where my roots anchor me into the soil." A sense of belonging, of being rooted in one's place, is something most humans yearn for---especially in our twilight years.
