83.OF ANOTHER TIME

Donald Hazen Brown Archive By Don Brown

2003 CLARKSTOWN, NY. The field stone pillars and archway are all that remain of this bridge. Isolated in "The Dells"-a town park in Clarkstown, N.Y., this stone bridge once spanned this stream in this quiet ravine deep in the park. At another time, some years ago, it was probably part of a carriage road that serviced a large private estate. As I found a vantage point from which to paint down in the dale, I thought about how these ordinary fieldstones had been used to create the graceful archway and the columns on either side. The ordinary is never ordinary. All has the capacity to announce grace and beauty. So much depends upon how we use what has been given to us.
